Options for a corporate phone system
Phone systems offer a variety of technologies, each suited to particular types of businesses. Here's a list of some of the most common options you'll find when shopping for a corporate phone system.
- Auto attendant. An automated telephone system uses a recorded voice to direct calls to the proper extensions. Usually it is combined with a menu that allows the caller to find the right company representative to speak with. A good auto attendant will be tailored to your company's needs.
- Call detail reporting. Call detail reporting (CDR) can offer insight into how your business communicates with customers, as well as within your organization. CDR provides you with the ability to track which agents are on the phone, who they are speaking to, and how long their conversations last. A more sophisticated system will offer you the ability to assign certain calls to a specific account number, making client billing more accurate and easier to compile.
- IP telephone. This is a simple piece of equipment that can be plugged into any Ethernet jack. This represents a significant advantage over other corporate phone systems, such as PAR or key systems, which may require an electrician and extensive wiring every time a new phone is required. Instead, IP telephone systems can piggyback on common technology to offer more flexibility for your system.
- Computer/telephony integration. Usually referred to as CTI, this allows a typical corporate phone system to be completely integrated with a computer system. When a caller rings your number, the call is routed through a computer, which displays information about the call to the person who answers. This allows company representatives to view account information and answer questions while speaking to someone.
